Once you’ve found the perfect new or pre-owned Mercedes-Benz vehicle here at Mercedes-Benz of Orange Park, we know that you’ll want to make sure that it stays in top shape. One way to do that is by using the proper fuel, but you probably have some questions. What’s the difference between regular and premium gasoline? Is premium gas worth the price? We can answer those questions for you here at our Florida Mercedes-Benz dealership.

First, it’s important to know the primary difference between regular and premium gasoline. It’s all about the octane level. You’ve probably seen the numbers above each pump every time you go to fuel up. This is the octane level. The higher the octane level, the more “premium” the gasoline.

Octane levels above 91 denote that you’re filling up with premium gas. The higher octane level helps engine combustion happen at the right time. When it happens at the wrong time, it’s known as “engine knock.” While this won’t generally present a safety issue, it can reduce the lifespan of your engine.

One way to know if you need premium gasoline is if your vehicle’s owner manual says that you do. Sometimes a manual will say that it’s needed, but other times it will say that it’s recommended. A car that recommends premium gas could perform better when the tank is full of higher octane gasoline. You can try filling up your car with premium gasoline to see if it provides an even better driving experience, and then you can see if you think that paying a little extra at the pump is worth it.
